OCTOBER 11TH, 2008

Units were dispatched to a pedestrian struck on I469. Units arrived on scene and found a semi and a dump truck involved in a crash. one patient was taken to the hospital via EMS 45. All units returned to service without incident.

Congratulations to all the members of the newly organized Fire/EMS Honor Guard. The last few months of planning, hard work, and practice have paid off. The Honor Gurard presented the colors for the New Haven Football Homecoming game. Honor Guard Members are: Bryan Yoder, Cody Brooks, Maranda Tompkins, Jeff Schwartz, Michael Mackin, Dave Parmenter and led by Trent Bodie. Great job everyone!

On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week New Haven Fire/EMS trained with the Fort Wayne Fire Department Special Operations Team(SORT). The team gave an overview and awareness of all aspects of the SORT-why you would call, when to call, and what to do before the team arrives. Then the team performed a trench rescue behind station 3. Special thanks to Special Operations Chief James Mcintosh and to each shift crew leader.

On Monday September 22nd a class of 18 students began their 6 month process of becoming Indiana State Certified EMT's. Class will be taking place on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6 - 10pm at the Central Station. This is an excellent opportunity to get those needed in-service hours for EMT and First Responder. Pierce Fire Apparatus and the Volunteer and Combination Officers Section (VCOS) of the International Association of Fire Chiefs are pleased to offer an educational training course designed by practicing chief officers that delivers real world expertise through an interactive educational experience. The course is titled "Beyond Hoses and Helmets – Strategy and Tactics of Leading a Volunteer or Combination Fire/Rescue Organization." The United States Fire Administration and the National Emergency Training Center provided technical support in the development of course material and supporting documents. The support offered by Pierce Fire Apparatus allows VCOS instructors to present this course throughout the nation in an effort to support the VCOS mission - to provide chief officers who manage volunteers within the fire/rescue/delivery system with information, education, services and representation to enhance their professionalism and capabilities. Our vision is to be the leading international organization with sustained performance in representing the interests of the professionals who staff Volunteer and Combination Fire Departments. Hanover, a suburb of Richmond, Virginia, is a large combination system with about 150 career and 500 volunteer members. Chief Buchanan is a former Board Member for the VCOS and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the International Society of Fire Service Instructors. He is author of the Volunteer Training Officer’s Handbook from Fire Engineering Books and Videos and was a co-author on the Red and White Ribbon Reports from the VCOS. He also serves on the NFPA Technical Committee for Fire Service Training. Rick Haase, CFO, CFPS, CEM Rick Haase is the Emergency Response Coordinator/Fire Chief for the ConocoPhillips Wood River Refinery in Roxana, IL. Rick also serves as the volunteer Chief of the Staunton Fire Protection District, Staunton, IL. Rick holds associate degrees in industrial electronics and fire science technology from Lewis and Clark Community College and a bachelor’s degree in advanced fire administration from Western Illinois University. He holds numerous state/national fire service, EMS, and safety certifications. Rick is a field staff instructor with the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute and an instructor and member of the fire science advisory board of Lewis and Clark Community College. Rick is currently the vice-chairman of the IAFC Industrial Fire and Safety Section and is also active in other IAFC sections as well as other state and national emergency response organizations. He was honored as the 2001 Illinois Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year and as the 2004 Fire Chief Magazine National Volunteer Fire Chief of Year. He has been active in the fire service for over 25 years. This week for training New Haven firefighters completed the first annual combat challenge. Skills stations completed were ventilation(axe), equipment carry and maneuvering (dumbbells and cones), hoseline and hydtrant hook-up, hand over hand equipment raise, and victim carry. Firefighters were randomnly paired together in teams of 2 with 1 firefighter being under 35 and the other being over 35. Each team was timed for the title of champions, a combat challenge shirt, a plaque to have the names of every winning team each year for this new annual tradition. Special thanks Instructors Dave Parmenter and Cody Brooks for putting together this challenge and for making the necessary props.

On Saturday crews from New Haven and Woodburn went to the Regional Public Safety Academy for training. Firefighters were able to practice 4 training evolutions that included a PPE drill, Basement fire, kitchen fire, and bedroom fire. While also completing the stations of Back-up, Rehab, and Engine Operations. Special Thanks to DC Parker for arranging the training.

John Gunder is now on top the leader board in the A shift fishin derby. He was able to reel in this 15 inch, pound and a half catfish out of the creek next door. Rumor has it Shawna took it home to clean and eat.

On Wednesday July 30th, 2008 well over 100 Frirends, Family and members of the FIRE/EMS service joined in the ceremony to celebrate the achievement of both Fire and EMS Academy's. The ceremony was kicked off by the Fort Wayne Fire Department Pipe and Drum Corps (with a special thanks to Captain Bruce Bickley) along with Aboite Township Honor Guard ( thanks to Darren Kieffer). Our own Chuck Lake wonderfully was the Master of Ceremony for us. Mayor Terry McDonald provideds everyone with an uplifting speech. Both Fire and EMS Chiefs also gave a short reflection. Special thanks to the numerous individuals who came together for not only the adademy's but to put together this ceremony...THANK YOU.

Shortly after 7pm New Haven Fire and EMS were dispatched to a possible vehicle fire. Tanker 44, Emergency 45 and Engine 11 all responded on the initial dispatch. Tank 44 was the first unit on scene and advised a fully involved rail car fire-then bringing a full crew on Squad 18, Tanker 14, Engine 42 and Truck 17. Engine 162 was called in to assist with overhaul. All units cleared without incident.

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week the following area departments participated in training : New Haven, Woodburn, Hoagland, Monroeville, Southwest Allen County Fire District, & FWFD Stations 12 & 17. Crews practiced the hands on skills of dump tank and tanker shuttle operations. Drafting from a dry hydrant was practiced as well as drafting from a dump tank. Operations were set up at 2 sites. Thanks to all who participated and to all our mutual aid departments for participating. The new jet siphon will be placed on Tanker 44. Special thanks to District Chief Carl Bradtmueller & Brad Parker for putting on this training.

The New Haven Adams Twp. Fire Department responded to a reported hazardous materials spill in a chemical storage facility on the city's west side Monday morning. Once Fire 11 made the scene, he notified the FWFD special ops. chief and advised him of the situation. A decision was then made to have the FWFD regional haz-mat team respond to the location. Once crews arrived and organized a plan, crew members from FWFD haz-mat team made entry into the building to evaluate the situation. NHFD members were utilized for support and decontaminaton services. During operations at the spill, New Haven communications took a 911 call reference a possible building fire just north of our location. Due to our units being tied up at the first scene, BC 17 from FWFD offered a full response to respond from the city. New Haven truck 17 was first on scene and reported smoke showing from an overhead door. They advanced an attack line into the structure to find a classic car fully involved. Despite heavy smoke conditions, an agressive attack was made and there was no damage to the structure. DC 13 had command at the scene and held the assignment to Truck 17, Engine 9 and Ambulance 45-2.

The 11th annual car show on Broadway in Downtown New Haven was a success. There were 305 cars on showcase for this year's show. The weather was great, Fire Department Auxillary ice cream was delicious, the classic tunes were spinning by Truckin' Tim and a good time was had by all. All proceeds will benefit the Free Smoke Detector program so all residents in our community can have free working smoke detectors in the their homes

On Monday morning, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings of this week training was completed. New Haven Firefighter completed the National Fire Academy's hand off program of the Calling the Mayday. Firefighter were put in realistic simulations that would meet the parameters for a firefighter to call a Mayday. Firefighters went through the complete process of calling a Mayday, completing the Lunar acronym. Training was also completed to verify 700 tone procedures with New Haven Dispatch personnel on duty during all training evolutions. Great job everyone.

Units were dispatched to a barn fire, bringing Poe, Hoagland and New Haven on the initial dispatch. Addiitional units responded from Monroeville. Also an Area 4 tanker response was requested bringing Tankers from New Haven, Woodburn, Poe, Hoagland, Monroeville, and Southwest. Fire 133 had command of the incident. Truck 17 was utilized to protect the nearby house. Units From New Haven were Truck 17, Tankers 14, 44, 124, and Fire 11. Units from Hoagland were Engine 131, Tanker 133, Emergency 135, and Fire 133. Units from Poe were Tanker 103, 104 and Emergency 105. Units from Monroeville were Engine 31, Tanker 34, and Rescue 38. Units from Southwest were Tankers 153 and 253. Woodburn responded with Tanker 163. All units cleared without incident.

NHATFD units responded to a Semi roll-over. On arrival the driver was out of the vehicle. The driver was escorted to EMS 45 and taken to the hospital. Fire units stayed on the job to take care of a diesel fuel leak. The leak was contained to the roadway and a drainage ditch. Absorb-all was brought in by Truck 19 and Squad 18 to help contain the leak. Units making the job were E11, S18, T19, F11, all units cleared without incident.

Hoagland Fire was dispatched to a reported field fire, shortly after Grass Rig 139 called en-route dispatcher notified Hoagland Units fire was large and close to a house. Hoagland requested an Engine from New Haven, then a task force bringing Fire 11, Tankers 14 and 44. Monroeville and Poe responded also with Grass Rigs. Engine 11 crew extinguished a small storage trailer and assisted Tank 133 on hitting several small spot fires and cutting down a few trees. Tanker 14 supplied additional water to Engine 11--Tanker 44 stood by, then took an ambulance assist with E 45 Truck II. Fire 135 had command of the incident. Our thanks to Fire 135 and Fire 138 for the call.

Just after 5 o'clock started a busy night for the New Haven Fire/EMS. Units were first dispatched to a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle. Engine 11, Squad 18, Fire 11 and Emergency 45 all made the scene. EMS transported a patient to a local hospital. While crews were still on scene with the accident--Emergency 45 truck II and Rescue 48 made a medical emergency response and also tranported a patient to a local hospital. While Engine 11 remained on scene of the first call for a few hours, volunteers staffed Truck 17 and Squad 18 for any other calls that may have come in. Shortly after returning to service around just after 2000 hours Fire units were dispatched to a vehicle Fire. Engine 11 and Tanker 14 responded and extinguished. Fire/EMS were then dispatched to a trailer fire. With a crew still on station...Truck 17 and Squad 18 both fully staffed responded from Base 10 first out along with E-45 I & II. Engine 12, Engine 42, Fire 11,Med Car 45, Fire 122 and Fire 19 all responded as well. Quick Attack was made by Truck 17 crew. Squad 18 and Engine 42 performed overhaul. Engine 12 secured utilities. Fire 11 had command Medic 45 had safety & Fire 19 and Fire 122 had the investigation.

Base 10 Volunteers started there work detail night off busy with a car accident, vehicle fire then a trailer fire. In between all these runs still completing their regular station work detail of checking all the equipment on each of the trucks, spraying down the bay floors, maintenance of hand tools. Then when all that was complete finishing up the night with a review of running procedures and training on Enngine pumping operations and Ladder Pipe Operations. Keep up the hard work guys!

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week New Haven Fire/EMS conducted SCBA Skills, Ladder Operations and Grass Rig training for a training session. Members completed a short course with several confined space obstacles, tools strategically placed for memorization/familiarization training, simulated stairs, under and through trucks, all completed with the confined space tube crawl.

Fire and EMS units were dispatched to the area of Tillman and Franke Road reference a car accident. Fire 126 arrived on scene, assumed command and determined there were no injuries. Engine 11 arrived on scene shortly after, it was determined there were no hazards. Both Fire and EMS units returned to service. Thanks to photographer Tim Bristow for photos.

New Haven Fire/EMS were dispatched to a reported chimney fire just about dinner time. Upon the first units responding, dispatchers advised the homeowner had a fully involved fire in the chimney box. Units responding on the call were Truck 17, Engine 42, Squad 18, Engine 12, E-45, Fire 11, DC 12 and DC 14. Truck 17 went interior to investigate and Squad 18 crew made the roof for the inspection. New Haven Fire/EMS were dispatched to a report of smoke in the structure. Truck 17, DC 13, Fire 12, Squad 18 and E-45 responded on the call. DC 13 had command and held only the first responding units. Upon arrival E-45 had to check a pt and Truck 17 went interior and began oerhaul and extinguishment operations.

The B-shift responded to reports of a semi tractor fire. New Haven communications came back stating they have recieved mutiple calls. D.C. 13 arrived and confirmed a fully involved truck. Truck 17 and Squad 18 extinguished the fire and performed overhaul. D.C. 13 held the assignment to the two companies.

Units respond to a early morning crash, all occupants were checked out by EMS patient refusals were taken by medics. All units went back into service without incindent. F11, E11 and E45-2 all made the job.

A-shift started out the shift with 3 separate crashes in almost the same spot on 469. All 3 were single vehicle rollovers. On arrival of the first one, the driver was trapped in the vehicle on its side. E-11 crew used the rescue struts and the winch off of E-11 and S-18 to stabilize the vehicle. Both crews then used the hurst cutters and removed the roof to remove the pt. E-45-2 transported pt. to Parkview in fair condition. The 2nd crash happened about 400 yards from the first. R-48 assisted E-45 with packaging of patients and they were transported to Parkview in good condition. About 30 minutes later, E-11 and S-18 made another crash at the same spot as the first. The driver was out on arrival and transported to Parkview by E-45-3 in good condition.

New Haven Fire Units were dispatched to a house fire just after clearing an electrical fire. With units already on the road, Tanker 14, Engine 42, Squad 18, Fire 16, and Fire 11 all responded on the call. Tank 14 and Engine 42 arrived on scene first and began to attack the trailer fire. Fire 16 arrived quickly and assumed command. A quick knockdown of the fire was made, Squad 18 performed overhaul and a search of the structure. All units returned to service without incident.

New Haven Fire/EMS units were dispatched to reports of smoke in a house. Truck 17, Tanker 14, Emergency 45, Squad 18, Engine 42 and Fire 11 all made the run. Upon investigation Truck 17 found it was an electrical fire in the wall. Command quickly released all units except Squad 18 and Truck 17. Truck 17 crew performed overhaul and removed the power from the structure. Squad 18 was quickly released for another reported structure fire.

Engine 11 arrived on the scene and found a vehicle fully involved. E11 crew pulled an 1 3/4" handline and extinguished. The hood of the vehicle was opened up with a V-cut using a sawzall. T14 crew assisted E11 with traffic and tools. Dc 13 commanded the incident. All units returned to service without incident.

Our goal is to ensure that all our residents have a working smoke detector in their home. These detectors were funded by the Trion Tavern and New Haven canal cruisers car club.
